Riga’s history has always been associated with trade. The construction of the Riga Central Market was completed in 1930. The metal frame of the zeppelin hangars, the five pavilions, the underground infrastructure, the complete complex that ensures an active trade in the Latvian capital, where many home producers, farmers and craftsmen come.
The construction of the Central Market began in June 1924 with the demolition of two rows of warehouse buildings in the Spīķeri quarter. The project included five pavilions: the largest (5000 m2) was intended for wholesale and meat processing, while the smaller ones, each 2592 m2 in area, were intended for retail. After structural adaptations, the hall was 20.5 m high and 35 m wide. The construction of this huge complex required 6 million bricks, 2 460 tonnes of iron and 60 000 barrels of cement.
The Riga Central Market features the Gastro Market, a pavilion where several caterers offer guests the opportunity to choose their preferred meal, more than 20 cafés or restaurants, with dishes to suit all tastes and in different price categories.
