May you have a joyful and peaceful holiday!

The Summer Solstice Festival, known in Latvia as Līgo and Jāņi, is one of the country’s most important and beloved celebrations. Taking place during the shortest night of the year, from 23 to 24 June, the festival marks the peak of summer when nature is at its most vibrant and daylight reaches its maximum length. Rooted in ancient Baltic traditions, these celebrations have been preserved for centuries and remain one of Europe’s most authentic cultural experiences.

Līgo and Jāņi celebrate the summer solstice, symbolizing the power of the sun, fertility, prosperity, and the connection between people and nature. The traditions originate from pre-Christian times and continue to play an important role in Latvian culture today. Across the country, people gather outdoors to sing, dance, celebrate around bonfires, and welcome the sunrise.

Visitors are encouraged to take part in some of Latvia’s most cherished Midsummer traditions:

  • Wearing flower wreaths or oak leaf crowns.
  • Singing traditional Līgo songs throughout the night.
  • Gathering around bonfires, symbolizing light, strength, and protection.
  • Enjoying traditional Jāņi cheese with caraway seeds and local beer.
  • Staying awake until sunrise to welcome good fortune for the coming year.
  • Searching for the mythical fern blossom, one of the most famous legends associated with Midsummer Night.
